What the Committee Does

The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has broad jurisdiction over the Department of Homeland Security, federal emergency management, border security, cybersecurity, and the protection of critical infrastructure. It also serves as the Senate's main oversight committee for the structure and performance of the entire federal civil service.

The committee examines how agencies manage taxpayer dollars, conducts investigations into waste, fraud, and abuse, and oversees government-wide policies on procurement, personnel, and regulatory reform. It also handles legislation and resolutions involving the U.S. Postal Service and continuity of government.

Led by the Chair and Ranking Member, the committee holds high-profile hearings with cabinet officials, inspectors general, experts, and whistleblowers. Its work helps shape the nation's defenses against terrorism and cyberattacks while pressing for a more transparent and effective federal government.
