Senator Josh Hawley

“Big tech, big government, and big corporations should never silence the American people.”

Josh Hawley

Josh Hawley is the senior United States senator from Missouri, serving since 2019. He rose quickly through state politics after winning the Missouri attorney general race in 2016 and then defeating incumbent senator Claire McCaskill in 2018.

Before elective office, Hawley built a resume in elite legal and academic circles. He studied history at Stanford, earned his law degree from Yale, clerked for Judge Michael W. McConnell and Chief Justice John Roberts, and later taught constitutional law at the University of Missouri School of Law.

In the Senate, Hawley markets himself as a nationalist populist. He blends culture war combat with selective economic intervention, pushing a tougher line on Big Tech, trade, and corporate power while emphasizing border security and socially conservative priorities.

Hawley is also defined by high salience political flashpoints. He became the first senator to announce plans to object to the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, a move that made him a central national figure for both supporters and critics and reinforced his reputation as a confrontational operator with presidential ambitions.

  • Elevated “economic nationalism” inside the GOP with arguments for tougher trade policy and skepticism of global institutions.
  • Pushed high visibility proposals on social media design and youth online harms, framing them as anti addiction reforms.
  • Became a defining figure of the post 2016 GOP ideological turn, blending social conservatism with selective economic populism.

Controversies

  • Drew intense backlash for leading Senate efforts to object to certification of the 2020 election results.
  • Faced corporate and donor blowback after January 2021, including temporary freezes from some PAC networks and major brands.
  • Criticized for opportunism and “ladder climbing” after running for Senate soon after becoming attorney general.
  • Has been accused of inflaming culture war politics and using grievance framing to boost national ambitions.
  • Has drawn scrutiny over hardline positions on abortion and LGBTQ issues, including votes and rhetoric opponents call extreme.
