John Karl Fetterman is the senior United States senator from Pennsylvania, serving since 2023. Before the Senate, he served as mayor of Braddock (2006–2019) and as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor (2019–2023), building a statewide brand around blunt messaging, labor politics, and a blue-collar outsider image.
Born August 15, 1969, in the Reading area, Fetterman studied finance at Albright College and earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut. After working in insurance, he joined AmeriCorps and later earned an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School. His AmeriCorps work pulled him toward local service and eventually to Braddock, where he tried to revive a collapsing former steel town through redevelopment, arts, and youth programs.
As lieutenant governor, he chaired Pennsylvania’s Board of Pardons and became closely associated with clemency reform and marijuana legalization advocacy. In 2022, he won a high-profile Senate race and entered Washington with a style that mixes progressive economics, culture-war defiance, and heavy emphasis on authenticity, sometimes clashing with both party leadership and the activist left.
His tenure has also been shaped by health and media scrutiny, especially after his 2022 stroke. He has leaned into a confrontational, very-online communications strategy while focusing substantively on jobs, infrastructure, labor, and industrial resilience.
