Senator Joni Ernst

“We must remain vigilant in saving what's best for America.”

Joni Ernst

Joni Ernst has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 2015, after winning an open-seat race in 2014 and securing re-election in 2020. A retired lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard, she built her brand around military service, discipline, and “Heartland” conservatism that plays well in rural Iowa.

Before Washington, Ernst served as Montgomery County auditor and later in the Iowa State Senate, giving her a classic county-to-capitol-to-Congress trajectory. Her rise was powered by a highly effective “cut waste” message, the pig-castration “cut pork” ad, that turned her into a national Republican recruit almost overnight.

In the Senate, Ernst generally governs as a mainstream conservative with a strong defense and veterans profile. She emphasizes Armed Services priorities, a hawkish posture toward adversaries, and a pro-agriculture agenda focused on ethanol, farm economics, and limiting regulatory burdens on producers.

Politically, she balances establishment leadership roles with Iowa-first positioning, careful to protect biofuels and farm interests even when national party strategy creates friction. Her style is more disciplined than bomb-throwing: hardline on core GOP issues, but tuned to Midwestern pragmatism and coalition-building inside the conference.
