Senator Ron Wyden

“I don't care who you love. If you love this country enough to risk your life for it, you shouldn't have to hide who you are.”

Ron Wyden

Ron Wyden has served as Oregon’s senior United States senator since 1996, after previously representing Portland and much of northwest Oregon in the U.S. House from 1981 to 1996. Known as a libertarian leaning Democrat, he has built a long running profile as a leading advocate for privacy rights, internet freedom, and limits on government surveillance, often pressing the intelligence community on secrecy and civil liberties.

Born in Wichita and raised in Palo Alto, Wyden attended the University of California, Santa Barbara on a basketball scholarship before transferring to Stanford, where he earned a degree in political science. He later earned a law degree from the University of Oregon. In Oregon, he worked on aging and consumer issues, founded the state chapter of the Gray Panthers, and built a reputation as a watchdog oriented reformer before launching his congressional career.

In the Senate, Wyden has been a central player on tax, health, and technology policy. As the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, he has repeatedly pushed for tax reform framed around fairness, transparency, and middle class relief, while also emphasizing oversight of corporate loopholes and the consequences of tax policy on housing and investment behavior. His work frequently sits at the intersection of fiscal policy and the modern digital economy.

Wyden is also deeply tied to energy, climate, and natural resource debates important to Oregon, pairing clean energy priorities with an emphasis on jobs and industrial transition. Across decades in office, his brand has combined wonky policy focus with an independent streak, occasionally breaking with party orthodoxy while remaining a reliable Democratic vote on core social rights and civil liberties.
