Peter Welch is the junior United States senator from Vermont, serving since 2023. A longtime Vermont political figure, he previously represented Vermont’s at-large House district from 2007 to 2023 and became only the second Democrat to represent Vermont in the U.S. Senate.
Born May 2, 1947, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Welch graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and earned his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He practiced law for decades in Vermont, including work as a public defender and later as a personal injury attorney.
Welch built his career through state politics, serving multiple terms in the Vermont Senate and becoming president pro tempore, a role he held after Democrats gained control. In Washington, he’s emphasized rural broadband, climate and clean energy, prescription drug affordability, and pragmatic coalition-building rooted in Vermont’s independent political culture.
In the Senate, Welch has focused on bread-and-butter governance and oversight, including agriculture and rural development, judiciary and constitutional issues, and healthcare and energy policy within the Finance Committee portfolio.
