Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith

“I will always protect Mississippi values and fight for our way of life.”

Cindy Hyde-Smith

Cindy Hyde-Smith is an American politician and lobbyist who has served as Mississippi's junior United States senator since 2018. A member of the Republican Party, she previously served as Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce (2012–2018) and represented the 39th District in the Mississippi State Senate (2000–2012).

Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi and raised in Monticello, Hyde-Smith attended Lawrence County Academy and later graduated from Copiah–Lincoln Community College (AA) and the University of Southern Mississippi (BA in criminal justice and political science). After college, she worked as a lobbyist and held regional leadership roles for national advocacy organizations before returning to Mississippi politics.

Hyde-Smith entered elected office as a Democrat, winning a state Senate seat in 1999 and serving from 2000 to 2012, including a period chairing the Senate Agriculture Committee. She switched parties in 2010, citing her conservative beliefs, and won election as Mississippi Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce in 2011, becoming the first woman elected to that office, and was reelected in 2015.

In March 2018, Governor Phil Bryant announced his intention to appoint Hyde-Smith to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Thad Cochran; she was sworn in on April 9, 2018. She won the 2018 special election and was reelected in 2020. Her Senate profile is anchored in agriculture and rural policy and reinforced by committee work spanning Agriculture, Appropriations, Energy & Natural Resources, and Rules.
