Marion Michael Rounds is an American businessman and politician serving as the junior United States senator from South Dakota since 2015. A Republican, he previously served as the 31st governor of South Dakota (2003–2011) and earlier represented the Pierre-based 24th district in the South Dakota Senate (1990–2001), rising to Majority Leader in the mid-1990s.
Raised primarily in Pierre after being born in Huron, Rounds earned a B.S. in political science from South Dakota State University. Outside politics, he worked in insurance and real estate as a partner at Fischer Rounds & Associates, building a business-first profile rooted in Pierre and statewide commerce.
Rounds entered the governor’s race in 2002 as an underdog, won a crowded and contentious GOP primary, and went on to win the general election. He was reelected in 2006. As governor, he emphasized steady administration and economic development while his tenure also drew later scrutiny around the state’s EB-5 investment-visa program and Northern Beef Packers financing.
In the U.S. Senate, Rounds leans into national security, cybersecurity, veterans’ care, rural health access, and pro-growth tax and regulatory policy. He has also been active on artificial intelligence policy as a co-chair of the Senate AI Caucus and a member of the Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group.
