Senator Mike Crapo

“We must continue to fight for a government that lives within its means and protects our freedoms.”

Mike Crapo

Mike Crapo is the senior United States senator from Idaho, serving in the Senate since 1999. Before that, he represented Idaho in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1999, after building a reputation in Boise and eastern Idaho as a disciplined conservative on budgets, taxes, and institutional procedure.

Born in Idaho Falls, Crapo earned a political science degree from Brigham Young University and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He practiced law in Idaho Falls through much of the 1980s, then entered elected office in the Idaho Senate in 1984. He later became president pro tempore of the Idaho Senate from 1988 to 1992, which positioned him as a central figure in state Republican leadership.

In Washington, Crapo has built his profile around finance, tax policy, and regulatory issues. He has been closely associated with Senate negotiations on banking rules and tax legislation, and he is widely viewed as a detail driven committee legislator who prioritizes technical process, institutional leverage, and policy durability.

Politically, Crapo presents as a consistent conservative with strong ties to Idaho’s business, agriculture, and energy constituencies. His long tenure also includes moments that draw intense attention, including debates over Wall Street oversight, climate policy, gun regulation, and his approach to Senate confirmation norms, which has shifted with the political context and partisan stakes.
