Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg is an American politician and former naval officer who served as the 19th U.S. Secretary of Transportation (2021–2025). He previously served as Mayor of South Bend, Indiana (2012–2020), where he gained national attention for a governing style centered on data-driven city management, redevelopment, and infrastructure modernization.
Buttigieg is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. Before entering elected office, he worked in management consulting and political campaigns. He also served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and deployed to Afghanistan in 2014.
In 2019, Buttigieg launched a presidential campaign that quickly elevated him into the top tier of the Democratic primary field. He won the Iowa caucuses and finished second in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay candidate to win a presidential primary or caucus. He later endorsed Joe Biden and became a high-profile surrogate during the 2020 general election.
As Transportation Secretary, Buttigieg focused on implementing major federal infrastructure programs, transportation safety initiatives, and policy changes affecting aviation, rail, highways, and public transit. His tenure drew both praise for administrative competence and criticism over responses to high-profile transportation disruptions and regulatory debates.
