Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg was born January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana. He graduated from Harvard University and later studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Buttigieg served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including deployment to Afghanistan in 2014.
Buttigieg was elected Mayor of South Bend in 2011 at age 29, becoming one of the youngest mayors of a major U.S. city. He earned national attention for revitalizing local infrastructure, economic development projects, and introducing data-driven governance systems to modernize the city.
In 2019, Buttigieg launched a presidential campaign that gained momentum with his focus on generational change, pragmatic progressivism, and emphasis on national unity. He made history as the first openly gay major presidential candidate in U.S. history to win pledged delegates—during the Iowa Caucuses in 2020.
In early 2021, he was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Transportation, becoming the first openly gay Cabinet member in U.S. history. His tenure has focused on supply chain stabilization, broadband expansion, highway safety, climate-resilient transportation infrastructure, and major rail and aviation modernization projects.
Buttigieg remains widely viewed as a leading voice among younger Democrats, blending policy pragmatism with progressive values and positioning himself as a potential future presidential contender in the post-Biden era.
